A 14-year-old girl Ava Wood and her father were found shot to death at a home in upstate New York in an apparent murder-suicide on January 20. Baldwinsville police discovered the bodies of Christopher Wood, 51, and his daughter Ava Wood when the teen’s mother called police for a morning wellness check Friday.

Her last conversation with Christopher had been a day earlier, when she claims he warned her, “This is how it ends for us.” Baldwinsville Police Chief Michael Lefancheck and County Sheriff Toby Shelley, in a conference at noon on Friday, January 20, announced the deaths.

Lefancheck told WSYR-TV that Christopher’s head injury appeared to be self-inflicted and that the medical examiner and Criminal Investigation Unit needed to complete their investigation. Police will also investigate whether Christopher had a permit for the gun.

Police found Ava in a separate bedroom from her father Christopher at her Triangle Place home in Baldwinsville, both with fatal gunshot wounds to the head. It appears that Christopher’s injuries were self-inflicted. Police discovered the tragedy when Ava’s mother, whose identity is still unknown, told authorities that her daughter had not gone to school and that no one answered the door when she knocked.

Ava lived with her father after her parents separated. Authorities are investigating a precise timeline of the incident. The sheriff’s office said a woman made a 911 call around 8:31 am to request a status check at 6 Triangle Place after her daughter failed to show up for school. The woman said the cars were still in the driveway and told dispatchers that Ava was still home with her father.

Christopher and Ava’s mom were still married but they stayed apart. Sheriff Shelley told reporters that they had been called to two incidents involving Ava’s parents in March 2022 and just a few days ago, on January 18, 2023. In the recent one, Christopher harassed his estranged wife over messages. of text, while the previous incident in March 2022 involved harassment.

Ava was a freshman at Durgee Junior High School in Baldwinsville and was very interested in athletics. The Baldwinsville Central School District implemented crisis counseling for students and canceled all after-school activities after word of the tragedy reached them. The Baldwinsville School District also sent an email to parents and staff.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you of the tragic loss of Durgee Jr. High School ninth grader Ava Wood,” the email read. “We are a tight-knit school community and our hearts are broken by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with Ava’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”

It is important to allow children to talk about their grief experiences and what they need during this tragic time,” Acting Superintendent Joseph M DeBarbieri said in a statement. “The counselors urge him to listen to her son’s concerns and questions.
