OHIO: An 18-year-old Ohio high school student who allegedly brought a weapon to school on Monday, April 3, is being charged with attempted murder. Brandon Morrissette was charged in the incident at West Geauga High School in Chesterland, Ohio, and also faces charges related to unlawful possession of a deadly weapon in a school zone and misdemeanor inducing panic.

Police said a 17-year-old student came forward and informed the school resource officer that he found a bullet in a bathroom on campus. Nearly 20 students who used the bathroom in the morning were questioned after officials reviewed surveillance video.

Officers discovered an unloaded 9mm pistol just an hour into the search along with three loaded magazines in Morrissette’s backpack, as well as a knife in his pants. The school was eventually shut down after the shocking discovery was made.

Brandon Morrissette charged with attempted murder

Chester Township Police Department Chief Craig Young said Morrissette planned to harm the students. “During our interview with Mr. Morrissette, he admitted to using prior calculations and designs to develop a plan to harm students at West Geauga High School on April 3,” Young said according to Fox News. “He further acknowledged that the firearm seized by police on Monday was the weapon he intended to use to inflict that damage.”

West Geauga Local Schools Superintendent Richard Markwardt recognized law enforcement officers for their exceptional work in preventing an unwanted tragedy. “The potential tragedy was prevented by the collective and concerted efforts of these groups,” Markwardt said.

“It is a sad comment that schools must face challenges for the safety of students and staff, however, it is a reality that we must recognize and prepare for,” he added. “In reality, each threatening situation has unique nuances that require flexibility and decisiveness at the same time.”

Homestead police said that after being told a student had been discovered in possession of a handgun, officers were dispatched to Keys Gate Charter School located at 2000 SE 28th Ave.

Investigators determined that the boy’s father, Reginald McCoy, 39, put the gun in the backpack and forgot it for unknown reasons when the student was taken to school.
