Brenton Brumfield accused of second degree murder

Gulfport resident JaKamori “Kamori” Lake, 16, died of a single gunshot wound to the head shortly after she was taken in a personal vehicle to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, the Harrison County Deputy Coroner said, Whitney Valles.

Valles said someone arrived at the hospital with Lake at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, and she was pronounced dead at 1:32 p.m. “She was pregnant, but we’re not sure how long she was pregnant,” Valles said. Police said in a news release Monday that she was three and a half months pregnant.

The shooting occurred at the Gables Apartments, where Lake lived. The apartment complex is located in the 4000 block of 32nd Street. The events leading up to the shooting were not immediately known, but Gulfport investigators said Brumfield was the suspected shooter. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with funeral expenses.
