A 12-year-old boy who is believed to have died while walking on a motorway after an accident has been named. Callum Rycroft was fatally injured after being struck by a Toyota C-HR car between junctions 25 and 26 of the M62 at around 9:50pm. m. on Saturday night.

West Yorkshire Police have said they believe he was walking with a man after an earlier collision involving an Audi Q5 on the access road to Hartshead Moor services. Tonight, the force charged a man, Matthew Rycroft, with causing or allowing Callum’s death, as well as failing to provide a specimen.

The schoolboy’s mother also paid tribute to her ‘funny and larger than life’ son who ‘brought light, laughter and noise’ into her life. In a statement issued by West Yorkshire Police, she said: “Callum was a beautiful, happy soul who was unique, great fun and larger than life.” He brought light, laughter and noise to any room.

‘We miss you so much baby. We’ll all make you proud, Callum. Words cannot describe how devastated we all are. ‘We love you and miss you very much. Sleep tight, Callum, until we meet again. The force confirmed that Rycroft, 36, of Nowell View, Leeds, will appear before Leeds Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

Police revealed that the 47-year-old man who was driving the Toyota and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on bail pending further investigation. The force added that no other vehicles are believed to have been involved in that collision.Read More……
