Bodycam footage captured the moment a mother accused of beating her nine-year-old son to death told police he had “hit his head in the bathroom.” Carla Scott, 35, and her fiance Dirk Howell, 41, are accused of murdering Alfie Steele after subjecting him to a “cruel and sinister” punishment regime.

A court heard that Alfie died from more than 50 different injuries and his lifeless body was found in the bathroom of his ‘disheveled’ home in Droitwich, Worcestershire, in February 2021.

CPS has released police body camera footage showing Scott sobbing, as well as an audio recording of a 999 call, during the couple’s murder trial at Coventry Crown Court. The jury was played the emergency call made by Scott at 2:24 p.m. m. on February 18, 2021, alleging that her son had “fallen asleep” and drowned in the bathroom.

She remains calm as she tells the operator that she could “feel a rattle” in her son’s chest, adding: “He’s not breathing, but he’s still making noises.” After being told an ambulance was on the way, Scott says, “he fell asleep in the bathroom.” She has asthma. When she was a baby she got pneumonia.

The operator proceeded to give instructions on how to give Alfie CPR before Scott says, “I can see him breathing a little bit.” Not much, but I can see him breathing a little. She says that her son is starting to make noises, at which point the call manager asks “What noises?” and Scott replies, ‘Lots of gargling noises.’

Carla Scott accused of killing her son Alfie

When Scott confirmed to the operator that the ambulance had arrived, she also added: “He hit his head too.” Police body camera captured the landing packed with paramedics and officers and Scott standing in the doorway of a “dark, dirty and scruffy” room where she found Alfie.

Scott can be heard telling officers, “I think he hit his head when he was in the bathroom because he has [inaudible] in the head.” She can also be seen making a phone call to Howell in another clip to ask him where he was and she tells him: ‘he’s gone to the hospital, they won’t let me up yet’.

There are a lot of police, they have detectives and everything. On the wall in the living room in the background are the words: ‘Family, where life begins’. She ends the phone call by saying ‘I will, I love you too’ and makes a kissing sound on the phone.

The couple is accused of leaving the child with 50 separate injuries to the head, back, legs and buttocks, which eventually led to her death. It is alleged that Alfie was beaten with belts and flip-flops, as well as “dunked” in cold water baths and forced to stand outside and throw water at him.

Prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC previously told the court: “In short, just before 2:30 p.m. m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021, Carla Scott called 999 and requested an ambulance. She explained to the operator that Alfie had fallen asleep in the bath, gone below the surface, and although she had pulled him out and was trying to resuscitate him, she said Alfie was not breathing.

She added: ‘Alfie hadn’t just fallen asleep in a comfortable bathroom. “He had been deliberately and repeatedly mugged, beaten and put in a cold bath as punishment, and that course of illegal conduct, that unnecessary punishment, was carried out jointly by Carla Scott and Dirk Howell.

It was his actions that led to his death. CCTV footage, released by the CPS on Tuesday, showed Howell was arrested at Droitwich train station, minutes after Alfie’s death. In the video, Howell can be seen running across the bridge over the train tracks before attempting to board a stopped train.

However, Howell discovered that the doors had already been locked and the train started when officers confronted him at 3:33 p.m. m. on February 18, 2021. One of the officers asks him ‘What’s your name friend?’ before Howell replies: ‘Dirk Howell, why?’ The officer says, ‘I need to have a quick chat with you… okay, okay, he puts his hands up for me, so right now, you’re under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.’

In police body camera footage shown to the court, Howell is heard saying ‘You what?’ after being informed of the arrest and adds: “I am not running.” After being handcuffed, Howell told officers that he had done nothing wrong and that he was “disgraceful” to be charged. Howell went on to ask if Alfie was okay, to which an officer replied that they “didn’t really know.”

Howell, of Newtown, Birmingham, has previously admitted child cruelty against other children but denies murder, manslaughter, cruelty or causing or allowing the death of Alfie.
