Charges on Cecily Aguilar

Cecily Ann Aguilar pleaded guilty in November to one count of accessory to murder after the fact and three counts of false statement or representation. Guillen, a private who received a posthumous promotion to specialist, was last seen alive on April 22, 2020 at Fort Hood, Texas. Initially there was no public sign of his whereabouts. That changed June 30, when contractors working on a fence found human remains along the Leon River in Belton, according to federal investigators.

US Army and federal investigators said 20-year-old Specialist Aaron David Robinson had killed her. They confined him to his barracks, but he fled past his escort and left Fort Hood for the town of Killeen. He fatally shot himself in the head when he confronted police, authorities said. “So how does a boy like that disappear?” said attorney Natalie Khawam, a lawyer for Guillén’s family, after the suspect’s death. Exit the base. No one can see it on foot. And then how do you find a weapon? The questions I just asked will never end.”

Guillén’s family criticized the military, arguing that officers did not initially take his disappearance or the allegations of sexual harassment seriously. The Army promised reforms. Robinson’s death left Aguilar as the only defendant in the case, the only person facing punishment for Guillén’s tragic and violent death. Aguilar confessed to her role in the crime and that Robinson committed the murder.
