A teenager in West Virginia was recently sentenced to 80 years in prison for the admitted murders of his mother and sister. Connor Crowe, 16, pleaded guilty in November 2022 to two counts of second-degree murder for the September 2020 murders that took the lives of his 15-year-old sister and mother, Melissa Rowland, 39, at the family home on Ardmore Avenue in New Cumberland: a small town west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

On the day in question, Crowe fired multiple rounds into the chest and torso of each victim, according to The Weirton Daily Times. After the matricide and sororicidal attack, the defendant ran out of his house screaming that a stranger had broken in and killed his family, the newspaper reports, citing prosecutor Steven Dragisich.

Crowe later told a neighbor that he shot the stranger in the shoulder, pulling the gun out of his pajamas. Bullet fragments and bullet casings at the crime scene matched the gun Crowe showed his neighbor. The teenager was covered in gunshot residue. Police also said there was no evidence of forced entry into the residence or of anyone fleeing the premises.

Crowe was 13 years old at the time. “I am aware of the fact that he was 13 years old, but my job and my duty as the prosecutor of this county is to protect the public and hold people accountable for their actions,” Dragisich told Circuit Judge Jason Cuomo after the boy was declared guilty. “So we’ll be looking at the maximum penalty allowed under the law, a 40-year sentence for each offense, which would be a total of 80 years.”

Crowe was reportedly unsure about relinquishing rights to him during his plea hearing, twice leading the judge to halt the proceedings. “There was a long hesitation there, and every time that happens to me that brings me back to my heels,” the judge said. “I don’t want anyone to plead guilty if they hesitate to any degree; I would prefer that all defendants go to trial in front of me, all the time. I’ll give you another chance… what’s the hesitation?

After consulting with his attorney and some more back and forth between the court and the attorneys involved, Crowe pleaded guilty. The judge finally accepted the guilty plea and warned the defendant that he could have tried his luck with a jury that awarded him a lesser sentence. And, in motions, Crowe asked the court for exactly that. Cuomo was not receptive to the request.

“He is asking this court for something less than the maximum so that he can do something himself,” the judge said in comments reported by Wheeling, West Virginia-based ABC/CBS/MyNetworkTV affiliate WTRF. “That is what you are asking. That is what he has said in the file. I think your sister would have graduated from high school a week or two ago.

She will never have that opportunity. She will never be able to go to college. She will never be able to walk down the aisle and get married and have her own children of her own. You took that from her. You didn’t give her a chance to do something for herself, but you’re asking me to do that to you.

As requested by the state, Crowe was sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in prison for each murder. Cuomo ruled that the sentences would be served consecutively or one after the other.

“It is my duty to protect the public and keep everyone safe and the most effective way to do that was to sentence him to the maximum amount,” the prosecutor said, according to WTRF. “And I’m glad the judge saw it the same way.” He faced a minimum sentence of 10 years for each murder. No motive for the violence has ever been revealed.

“Yeah, there’s no excellent explanation, and I don’t think we really understand why,” Dragisich said last year, after the plea hearing, in comments reported by Steubenville, Ohio-based Fox affiliate WTOV.
