The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. m. at a Richland store on Wednesday and ended shortly after police entered the building and shot the unidentified suspect.

A video posted to social media showed a woman holding a gun in one hand and using her other hand to restrain a person wearing a Walmart employee vest. The woman with the gun yelled that she needed help and that she wanted to speak to a newscaster. Another video on social media showed police telling the armed woman to take her hands off her. The woman yelled that she wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.

Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon told WAPT-TV that no one else was injured in the shooting.

“It’s devastating for all parties involved: the officers, everyone who was involved in this situation,” McLendon said. “You know, with the holiday season coming up, mental health is a big problem because of the stress that comes with the holiday season.”

Horrific footage taken by a shopper showed the woman pointing the gun directly at the head of a wide-eyed and terrified worker as she walked in front of the store.

It is unclear what prompted the woman to pull the gun from her, but she was seen shaking in anguish. The worker was not injured.

The incident occurred nearly a month after the mass shooting in Virginia that left six Walmart workers dead. Footage from inside the Walmart showed the woman screaming loudly at the beginning of the video.

It is not clear what she said to her, but she seemed to be waiting for something.

Seconds later, the woman saw the man taking the video and insisted that she was not going to hurt the hostage.
One shopper recalled the moment she was about to walk into Walmart to do some last-minute Christmas shopping as others ran out the doors.

“As soon as we walked in, people were running out and people were yelling at me and my cousin ‘get out,'” a woman told WAPT. “So we ran out and it was horrible and then we heard the shot.”

Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon called the officer-involved shooting “devastating” and stressed how difficult the holidays can be for some people.
