England legend George Cohen has died aged 83, his former club Fulham has announced.

A World Cup winner with the Three Lions on home soil in 1966, the right-back played every minute of the tournament and was second-captain in a 4-2 win over West Germany in the Wembley final. Cohen represented his country 37 times in total.

A one-club man, Cohen is one of the greatest players in Cottagers history, making 459 appearances between 1956 and 1969.

A statement from the club read: “All of us at Fulham Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest players, and gentlemen, George Cohen MBE.”
Cohen’s career was cut short by a knee injury when he was just 29, though only three players in Fulham history have represented the club more: Johnny Haynes (658), Eddie Lowe (511) and Les Barrett ( 491).

While Cohen’s former England team-mate Sir Geoff Hurst said: “Very sad to hear that my friend and England team-mate George Cohen has died. Everyone, without exception, always said that George was a charming man. He will be sadly missed, my sincerest thoughts are with George’s wife Daphne and her family.”

Gary Lineker added: “Sorry to hear that George Cohen has died. He leaves us another of the heroes of the winning team of the ’66 World Cup. He will always have football immortality. RIP George.”

Cohen’s death leaves only two surviving members of England’s World Cup-winning team: Sir Geoff and Sir Bobby Charlton.

He would later work for his beloved Fulham, notably in the West London club’s hospitality suites and recounting stories of a legendary career.

In 2016 the club announced and later unveiled a statue of him outside Craven Cottage.

After being honored by the club, Cohen said at the time: “I find it absolutely wonderful that they even thought he was worthy of (a statue).

“Especially as he was alongside Johnny Haynes, the biggest name in Fulham history. Being with him was pretty amazing. It was great to think that not only the club but also the fans wanted to put a statue of me there.”

Away from his football career, Cohen was an activist and fundraiser for cancer research, which claimed the life of teammate and 1966 captain Bobby Moore.

Tributes have been flooded on social media and beyond.

Cohen’s former Fulham team-mate Alan Mullery told BBC 5 Live: “I’ve just been kicked in the teeth – it hasn’t been well for some time. George had a wonderful life, he has a wonderful family and He was a great player to play with.”

Former England player Gary Lineker wrote: “Sorry to hear George Cohen has died. Another of the heroes of the ’66 World Cup winning team is leaving us. He will always have footballing immortality. RIP George.”

Ian Callaghan, George Eastham and Terry Paine are the other three surviving players from England’s 22-man squad selected for the 1966 World Cup final.
