A Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputy Darnell Calhoun had been shot and killed in Lake Elsinore while on duty. Darnell Calhoun responded to a domestic violence call related to a child custody issue, where he was shot around 4:30 p.m. m. in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane on Friday, Jan. 13, according to the department. The officer was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in serious condition, and the department updated that he is undergoing surgery for injuries he sustained during the shooting, hitting him in the leg and torso region.

However, Calhoun succumbed to his fatal injuries at around 7:55 p.m. m., the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported. The department tweeted: “We are devastated to announce the passing of Deputy Darnell Calhoun, who died in the line of duty for him this afternoon. Updates will follow as soon as more information is available.” The 30-year-old joined RSO in February of last year.

He spent two years with the San Diego Police Department before joining the department, also reacting to Calhoun’s death: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of @RSO Deputy Darnell Calhoun, an SDPD officer through 2022. Tonight , he was killed in the line of duty while protecting Lake Elsinore. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at SDPD and @RSO. #SDPD6901”

“There is not one person with a negative thing to say about him. He was the happiest, most positive, healthiest good man you can imagine,” Sheriff Chad Bianco said during a news conference. He added: “Now a father, a mother, a wife and we are trying to find out why.” The department’s press release reveals, as reported by CBS News, “As Officer Calhoun approached the residence, the suspect began shooting at him and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

When an additional officer arrived, he was also fired by the suspect. The suspect was ultimately injured and taken into custody.” He added: “The suspect was transported to a local area hospital and treated for his injuries. The suspect is in critical condition.”

Giving an update on the second officer injured in the shooting, authorities said: “The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with Department policy.
