On December 1, a city public works employee reported a “suspicious abandoned car” with the keys in the driver’s seat of the “black 1988 Honda Accord two-door.” According to authorities, the car had been parked near the location since November 30. According to investigators, the body was found inside the trunk of the car and it appeared to them that “the body was placed there after her death.” The autopsy later determined that Deborah was “physically assaulted and strangled to death.” The cause of death was considered a “homicide”. But Deborah’s case eventually went cold, authorities said.

In 2020, authorities said the Washington district attorney’s office won a grant to “Pursuing Cold Cases Using DNA,” prompting them to launch a “Cold Case Unit” to investigate cold cases with a focus in crimes of a violent nature. Details of the case were unsealed to a Washington County grand jury on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. The grand jury indicted Atrops on one count of second-degree murder after hearing all testimony.
