Ellen Gilland Wiki – Ellen Gilland Biography

Ellen Gilland a 76-year-old woman has reportedly been arrested for fatally shooting her terminally ill husband at a Florida hospital following a pact police said the couple made several weeks ago.

The incident took place around 11:45 a.m. m. on Saturday, January 21, when Ellen Gilland shot her husband Jerry Gilland, 77, in the head on the 11th floor of AdventHealth Daytona Beach. Ellen locked herself in the room and refused to let go of her gun when authorities arrived, Chief Jakari E Young of the Daytona Beach Police Department said. After an hour-long standoff, the old woman finally gave up around 3 p.m.

Patients and staff surrounding the room were evacuated when authorities said they used a flash-bang device and bean gun to help apprehend Ellen, the New York Times reported. “Even after the initial shooting, she never tried to get up and leave, so everything was confined to the room,” Chief Young said. “At no time were any hospital staff members or any other patients threatened.”

incident detail

During the negotiation, the police learned that the couple allegedly planned the shooting about three weeks ago and decided to take the terrible step if Jerry’s health continued to deteriorate. “Apparently, because he was terminally ill, they had a discussion about it, and actually planned about it about three weeks ago, if it continued to get worse,” Chief Young said. “He wanted her to get this over with.”

Chief Young added that Ellen Gilland had even planned to commit suicide, but ultimately backed down. “Initially, I think the plan was a murder-suicide, so she killed him, and then she was going to shoot herself, but she decided she couldn’t go through with it,” he told reporters. “It is a tragic circumstance because it shows that none of us is immune to the trials and tribulations of life.”

Authorities said they are not sure Ellen managed to get a weapon into the hospital. She could face a first-degree murder charge, Chief Young said. “She’s very sad, this is obviously a… it’s a difficult situation.” he told him, adding that Ellen had been in a “depressed state because she understood that Mr. Gilland was terminally ill and that the “end was near”.

Reflecting on the horrific incident, the Florida-based AdventHealth system said in a statement: “We are devastated by the tragedy that unfolded today on AdventHealth’s Daytona Beach campus, and our prayers go out to those affected.”Read More….
