The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jared Gassen who deputies say barricaded himself and a woman in their home and physically assaulted her this week, according to a news release. The woman herself told her agents that she had been held inside her home, located just west of Rustic in Poudre Canyon on Colorado Highway 14, for more than a day while the man physically assaulted her until she could ask for help.

When agents arrived around 10:45 a.m. m. Tuesday, the woman was able to escape and she was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to a news release. The man and woman were in a relationship, according to statements made by defense attorneys and prosecutors at a court hearing on Wednesday.

The man remained barricaded in the home after police arrived, and officers from the Larimer County Regional Crisis Response/All Hazards Team arrived to assist. Multiple “less lethal tools” were used, including flash sound deflecting devices and irritant chemical gas, but the man still refused to leave the home, according to the sheriff’s office. The Coloradoan received reports of drivers stopped on Highway 14 during the hour-long standoff.

Shortly after 4 p.m., officers used K9 Tyr to detain the man, according to the news release. Jared Gassen, 39, was arrested on suspicion of second degree kidnapping and second degree assault, both Class 4 felonies. During a court hearing Wednesday afternoon, his bail was set at $25,000.

During Wednesday’s court hearing, a prosecutor with the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office testified that Gassen has no criminal record in Colorado and said he appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. Police are also investigating whether drug use was a factor in this case, according to a news release about Gassen’s arrest, but drug use was not mentioned at Wednesday’s court hearing.Read More……
