Jessica Bortle killed her daughter

An autopsy by the medical examiner showed that Jasmine suffered two fractured ribs and that her liver had been “torn due to blunt force trauma.” “[The doctor] described that her liver was obliterated and that the trauma caused [Jasmine] to die within minutes of receiving the injury,” police wrote in the affidavit.

At the time of the injury, Jasmine was confined to her bed in her hospital room with only her mother, Bortle, and her grandmother, Rose Mathis, with her. Surveillance footage in the hospital hallway showed Bortle coming out of her daughter’s room and “shaking and flexing her hand as if she were in pain” moments before hospital staff discovered her daughter was unconscious. .

Police said Bortle initially “lied” to investigators that she had no idea what she might have caused her daughter’s injuries, but she eventually admitted to hitting the girl with a hospital table in an attack. of anger. Bortle said she continued to lean on the table even after her daughter said she was in pain and she “acknowledged responsibility for causing the injury that killed Jasmine.”

“Bortle told me that while she was in the hospital room, Jasmine started cursing her because she was crazy about colored crayons. Bortle got mad at Jasmine because she was swearing and she opened the bedroom door,” the affidavit reads. “Bortle slammed the hospital table against Jasmine’s abdomen and then leaned over the table with her weight.”

The victim’s grandmother recounted a similar story, and she told investigators that she “s—hit the fan” just before the incident. The grandmother said that Bortles initially moved the hospital table to Jasmine so she could color, but the girl was soon “cursing” and “throwing and breaking crayons”, prompting Bortle’s violent outburst.

Investigators ultimately determined that Bortle leaned on the table with her full weight for so long that he “crushed the table against Jasmine’s liver, causing the ‘obliteration,'” described by the doctor. If he is found guilty of both charges, Bortle will face up to 45 years in prison.Read More…….
