Joan Hobbs Wiki – Joan Hobbs Biography
An 89-year-old woman was beaten to death by a dementia patient eight weeks after arriving at a nursing home. Joan Hobbs died after an 86-year-old patient entered her room and struck her with her walker on July 15 at the IRT Thomas Holt Aged Care Centre. Both residents were dementia patients at the Kirrawee-based care home near Sydney, Australia.
Ms Hobbs’ daughter, Erin Mulholland, previously cared for her mother for six years before reluctantly enrolling her in the home, after doctors advised that due to her worsening condition, she needed 24-hour care . The family was notified of the situation by text message from staff. Immediately after reading the text, Mrs Mulholland and her sister Terri Hobbs were rushed to Sutherland Hospital, where her mother was in critical condition.
The women told the news program that her mother suffered “devastating” injuries, including severe bruising to her face and broken bones in her arm that were “completely shattered.” “When I saw the physical condition she was in, the injuries, I just fell apart,” Ms Hobbs said. “Her left eye of hers was closed by swelling, you could see wounds on her arms, like defense wounds.”

Due to the extent of her injuries, her daughters’ only option was to sit with her and “wait until she died” because there was no way to save her. “I am mortified, absolutely stunned that something like this could happen,” Mulholland said. “She wouldn’t understand what was happening, how scared she must have been, terrified in those final moments.”

How Joan Hobbs was died?
The sisters added that they wouldn’t want something like this to happen to their worst enemy. Ms Mulholland and Ms Hobbs are now calling on the authorities to investigate the matter urgently, claiming that such a tragic situation would not have occurred if there had been more staff supervision.
While they don’t blame the nursing home or the man who injured her mother, they said the system had failed them. “There are not enough nurses on the floors and that is a government problem that they need to address,” said Ms Mulholland. We need more nurses per patient. “How many more have to die before we do something?” The family is not pressing charges against the man responsible, saying his family may already be suffering enough.
While there is nothing they can do to get their mother back, the women hope their story will motivate the government and relevant authorities to implement changes to prevent a similar situation from happening to another family. IRT has confirmed that it has “reported the incident to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.” A police investigation is also underway with a NSW Police spokesperson telling news.com.au that police are preparing a report for the coroner.
