A man who allegedly killed his roommate in a fight over stolen mail before dismembering his body and placing the parts in public trash bins six years ago in Indiana was arrested Thursday near Boston, police say. Massachusetts State Police said in a news release that John Hallett, 48, struck his roommate Paul Gonzales with a blunt object and strangled him to death in November 2017. Hallett then dismembered Gonzales’s body and he then disposed of the remains in various trash cans, the MSP said. .
Michigan City police said Det. Lt. Anna Painter opened an investigation in August 2022 after learning that a homicide possibly occurred inside a home on the city’s northwest side. A body-sniffing dog was sent to the house where the murder allegedly took place and alerted to possible human remains in the basement. The researchers sent the decomposing matter to a laboratory where it was confirmed to be human, the MSP said. Painter “worked quickly” to identify Gonzales, 64, as the victim and Hallett as the suspect, according to a Michigan City police news release.

John Hallett accused of killing his roommate
The Times of Northwest Indiana, citing an arrest affidavit, reported that Hallett hit Gonzales from behind with a crutch. Hallett believed that Gonzales was stealing his mail. Both men became homeless in 2015 before a housing agency placed them in a house together, the newspaper reported.
“John then moved Paul’s body to a bedroom for a few days, but then moved it to the basement where he was held for 56 days,” Painter wrote in the affidavit. “John then used a saw to cut up Paul’s body and placed the parts in trash bags where he then disposed of them in the city’s residential trash cans.”
Painter received a warrant for Hallett’s arrest on charges of murder and abuse of a corpse on August 8 of this year. Michigan City police and the US Marshals Service learned that Hallett was in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area. Hallett was taken into custody Thursday morning and transferred to the Middlesex Jail and Correctional Facility, where he awaits his extradition to Indiana.
