Video of the altercation was posted online by an independent journalist named Juan Alberto Vázquez, which also showed another passenger holding Neely’s arms while another person held Neely’s shoulder. Emergency services and police arrived after the train stopped at a station. Neely was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. His death has now been ruled a homicide caused by neck compression, DailyMail reports.

Shifa Rahman, a 22-year-old man who turned out at the vigil-turned-protest on May 3 inside the Broadway-Lafayette subway station, said, as stated by The City NY, “We can’t just continue to stand with complicity. the reduction and dehumanization of black lives.” Meanwhile, Adolfo Abreu, director of housing campaigns for the nonprofit human rights and social services group Vocal-NY, called Neely’s death “heartbreaking, as our collective failure. That this has happened is shocking and appalling.”

A woman at the protest, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “What outrages me is that my daughter woke up today and she can’t believe that today we have this amount of racism in what is supposedly the most progressive city.” . .”
