A Midlands man will go to prison for more than a dozen years after pleading guilty to charges related to setting the fire that destroyed his ex-girlfriend’s home while she and their children slept inside, the Midlands District Attorney’s Office said on Wednesday. 8th Circuit. Jorge Mora-Vahena accused of first-degree assault

When he was arrested on November 21, 2022, Mora-Vahena was also charged with second-degree domestic violence, unlawfully placing a child at risk or willfully causing harm or abandonment, and two counts of attempted murder, Newberry County shows the jail records. Following an investigation by the Newberry Fire Department, the Newberry Police Department and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was determined to have been set intentionally, the statement said. Mora-Vahena’s phone records placed him at the victim’s residence at the time of the fire, and when he was confronted with the phone records, he confessed to starting the fire, the attorney’s office said.
