NEW YORK: Shocking surveillance video showed a New York policewoman being hit in the head with a bottle. A man was seen trying to hit her along with another officer. On Monday, April 17, on a crowded sidewalk at 231st Street and Broadway in Kingsbridge, Jose Garcia, 45, suddenly walked up behind the uniformed officer and attacked her on the side of the head with a bottle.

Video shared by NYC Scoop on Twitter showed the man lunging at her and punching another officer who was standing next to her. Another person and the male officer then carried the attacker to the ground in front of Delicious Deli and Alltown Car Service.

A Kingsbridge Heights native, Garcia was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, obstruction of government administration, resisting arrest, threats, harassment and assault. Law enforcement sources said he has 11 prior arrests, the New York Post reported.

Charges on Jose Garcia

With the New York City Sheriff’s Department, the female officer was conducting smoke shop inspections when she was struck. According to police, the injured officer was taken to St Barnabas Hospital. She was listed in stable condition after being treated at the facility. The officer who was in the Bronx to conduct the inspections was stationed at a Queens police station.

The New York Post previously obtained initial video of the attack captured behind the suspect and officers. The man took her bottle from her right pocket and hit her on the head. The bottle then fell to the ground and broke. Garcia continued to attack both officers. Pedestrians responded to the scene in shock. A New York City sheriff who walked to the deli from a parked van just before the incident rushed to the scene and apprehended the assailant.

According to the news outlet, smoke shops in New York City have been illegally selling marijuana and other products. In February, Manhattan Mayor and Chief Prosecutor Eric Adams announced his decision to eliminate illegal retail operations in the city. Following the legalization of cannabis in 2021, 66 licenses were issued. With only two licensed shops open, around 1,400 illicit shops are believed to be operating in the city.Read More…….
