A Florida double murderer appeared with the word “murderer” written on his own teeth in court Monday, where he proceeded to assault his own lawyer. Joseph Zieler, 61, motioned for his attorney, Kevin Shirley, to speak to him after walking into court in handcuffs for a pre-sentence hearing into the murders of an 11-year-old girl and the babysitter of she.

After leaning in to speak to him, Zieler, who was ultimately sentenced to death, suddenly struck Shirley in the face with a violent elbow, spinning him around, courtroom video shows. As onlookers gasped, three bailiffs immediately subdued the tattooed Zieler, who was already restrained, and tackled him to the ground before leading him out of the courtroom.

According to video shown by the Fort Myers News-Press, the lawyer managed to maintain his composure and return to his table. Shirley then assured the judge that he was fine and that, as a former boxer, he had taken much heavier punches than Zieler had dealt.

Joseph Zieler accused of killing a lawyer

Zieler, 61, of North Fort Myers carried out the 1990 attack by breaking into a condominium and finding 11-year-old Robin Cornell and babysitter Lisa Story, 32, inside. The girl’s mother had gone to her boyfriend’s house for the night and she returned to the Cape Coral apartment the next day to find her daughter and Story dead. The victims had been sexually assaulted and beaten before being asphyxiated, prosecutors said.

The case went cold for more than two decades before new DNA evidence linked Zieler to the crime in 2016. He was already in custody for assaulting his stepson when he was charged with the double murder. A jury convicted him of the murders in May and recommended the death penalty earlier this month.

Zieler denied any connection to the crime and testified on his own behalf at his initial trial. Lee County Circuit Court Robert Branning formally sentenced Zieler to death Monday afternoon following the assault on his attorney.
