Keith Murriel Wiki – Keith Murriel Biography

A Mississippi grand jury indicted three former Jackson police officers in the death of Keith Murriel, a man who died shortly after a confrontation with officers in a hotel parking lot on New Year’s Eve. In police body camera footage obtained by CNN, officers say they were called to the scene by hotel security after Keith Murriel was repeatedly asked to leave for allegedly harassing people in the parking lot. Footage shows that during their interaction with him, officers delivered multiple electric shocks to the 41-year-old as he writhed and screamed in pain.

Emergency personnel could not be seen tending to Murriel in any of the roughly hour-long videos shared with CNN by Daryl Washington, an attorney representing Murriel’s estate. Two of the former officers, Kenya McCarty and Avery Willis, have been charged with second-degree murder, according to indictments filed May 19. The third, James Land, has been charged with manslaughter.

In addition to the criminal charges, the agents are also being sued by the Murriel estate. Washington filed a civil lawsuit against the officers alleging that Murriel lost consciousness after several rounds of electric shocks and then was left unattended in the back of a police vehicle for about an hour before emergency medical personnel arrived, according to the demand. “At no time did (officers) check on Murriel to determine if Murriel was okay, even though they had noted that he was unresponsive, unable to walk on his own, and in need of medical attention,” the lawsuit states.

Who killed Keith Murriel?

Murriel was taken to a hospital where he died, the lawsuit says. His cause of death, according to the lawsuit, was cardiac arrest. CNN reached out to the Hinds County Coroner about Murriel’s cause and manner of death, but did not immediately hear back. McCarty’s lawyer, Francis Springer, told CNN that his client “sincerely regrets the death of Mr. Murriel and has the deepest condolences for his family and friends” but “does not believe that he is guilty of the crime for which accused or of any other crime.”

McCarty, who was released from jail on $150,000 bail, will plead not guilty, Springer said. The land has been released on a $75,000 bond, according to Jones. CNN reached out to an attorney listed for Land, but did not immediately hear back. Public records requests made by CNN for police reports detailing the incident have not been honored. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba called what he had seen “excessive, discouraging and tragic” at a news conference on Wednesday.

“(This) is not representative of the vision of public safety that not only does this administration want to present, but that we believe the men and women within the Jackson Police Department want to present,” Lumumba said. Jackson’s interim police chief, Joseph Wade, said at the news conference that when his police department fails, “we create mistrust in the community.”

“We at [the Jackson Police Department] will continue to be transparent and continue to implement accountability measures, not just from the bottom up, but from the top down, as we move forward.” McCarty and Willis were the first to respond to the call, the videos show. According to the officers’ conversation in the footage, they escorted Murriel out of the hotel. McCarty was heard to say that Murriel returned to the hotel before the officers left.

Moments after the body cam footage of him begins, Willis is seen attacking Murriel from behind, knocking him to the ground. McCarty approaches Murriel and is repeatedly told by both officers to put his hands behind his back. Twenty seconds after Murriel hits the ground, McCarty tries it out for the first time, the video shows. Murriel does not appear to easily comply with the officers’ orders in the first few minutes of the confrontation, despite the officers’ repeated instructions.

However, in his civil suit, Washington says Murriel did not resist and never tried to harm the officers or anyone else. Washington says in the lawsuit that Murriel can be heard “begging officers to ‘please stop!'” The officers attack Murriel several more times, including once after he is in the police vehicle, the video shows. The civil lawsuit also criticizes the officers’ apparent callousness toward Murriel.

“(They) joked about how they treated Murriel and the condition he was in. It was apparent that Murriel was clearly in medical trouble and needed immediate medical assistance, but (they) provided none,” the lawsuit states. In body cam footage, Willis is heard saying, “That was funny.” “At first it was fun,” Land replied, “(but) after a while he got annoying.Read More……
