A 17-year-old girl in Ohio Marissa Grace Smith could spend the rest of her days behind bars for fatally stabbing a 22-year-old man in a Louisville park last year. Stark County Common Pleas Judge Natalie Haupt ordered Marissa Grace Smith on Monday to serve a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of 15-year parole for the murder of Michael Devin Morris Jr., court records reviewed show by Law&Crime.

Earlier this month, a jury found Smith guilty of one count of felony murder and one count of felony assault in Morris’s death, Stark County District Attorney Kyle L. Stone announced.

Marissa Grace Smith killed a man

According to the Louisville Police Department, an officer was patrolling the area near Wildwood Park at approximately 4 p.m. on September 13, 2022, when an individual stopped him and reported that there was a stabbing in the park. The officer called about the alleged attack and, along with several other Louisville Fire Department officers and medics, responded to the area where the stabbing allegedly occurred.

Upon arrival on scene, first responders found an adult male, later identified as Morris, who appeared to be suffering from a stab wound to the chest and attempted to perform life-saving procedures before transporting him to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital. Unfortunately, Morris was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility.

“The stabbing involved a knife and resulted from an altercation between those involved,” police wrote after Smith’s arrest. “The altercation involved multiple minors and reportedly stems from previous unresolved conflicts between some of those involved.”

A 15-year-old man was also arrested for the fatal fight. The youth, now 16, was charged as a juvenile and awaits his trial, which is scheduled to begin in June 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to juvenile charges of murder, criminal assault, aggravated burglary and carrying a concealed weapon. .

According to a report by The Repository, witnesses testified during Smith’s trial that a group of male and female teenagers had met at the park and were planning to fight. During the altercation, Smith pulled the knife from the co-defendant’s waistband and began moving toward Morris as he yelled at her, multiple witnesses said. Smith and several of his friends who testified told jurors that Morris then “lured” Smith to him and essentially “walked” onto the sheet.

Smith did not speak on his own behalf during Monday’s sentencing hearing. One of Morris’s family members, Tara Burns, read a victim impact statement addressed directly to Morris, who was sitting just a few feet from the podium.

“You had a phone and you stabbed him in the chest,” Burns said. “You could have called [the police] anonymously and told them someone was down, but you chose to let them die. That is inexcusable to me.”

Judge Haupt also spoke before the court. “I’m sure Ms. Smith has a lot of regrets,” Judge Haupt said before handing down the sentence. “But those mistakes cost Michael Morris his life and this court must impose a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.“Read More…….
