Italy’s most notorious mafia “godfather” has reportedly been captured in Sicily after 30 years on the run. Matteo Messina Denaro, 60, was arrested in the Sicilian capital Palermo on Monday, various outlets reported, including the BBC and La Repubblica.

He is believed to be the head of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and responsible for multiple murders, including the infamous 1992 murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, The Washington Post reported. Italian authorities also believe he was behind a series of fatal bombings in 1993 in Milan, Florence and Rome, the BBC added.

“A great victory for the State that shows that it does not surrender to the mafia,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni posted on Twitter after Denaro was arrested at a private medical clinic around 10:00 a.m. local time. “Another organized crime leader, Matteo Denaro, is brought to justice,” she added.

Former Italian anti-mafia prosecutor Gian Carlo Caselli added that the arrest was “exceptional… simply a historic event,” the BBC reported. Images of the arrest were published online by Italian media on Monday. It shows crowds of people applauding in the street as police officers took Denaro away to an undisclosed location.

The top-secret operation involved more than 100 law enforcement officers and was watched by thousands of Italians on television, the BBC reported. Along with the Camorra of Naples and the ‘Ndrangheta of Calabria, the Cosa Nostra is one of the three main crime families in Italy. Europol describes the organization as “the oldest, most traditional and most widespread manifestation of the Sicilian mafia” with experience in international money laundering and cocaine trafficking.

“Extremely skilled Cosa Nostra money launderers run legitimate business structures and have infiltrated the economy of some targeted countries, including South Africa, Canada, the US, Venezuela and Spain,” the Europol website adds. The organization also has an indelible link to Hollywood, through the three Godfather movies starring Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando and James Caan.Read More….
