New information has emerged after a Chicago man was accused of shooting the mother of his 8-year-old son through the front door of their home last month, killing their unborn child. Melvin Richmond, 30, and the victim, 30, have an 8-year-old daughter together, according to authorities. The woman was 14 weeks pregnant with her fiancé’s child at the time of the incident.

Richmond, according to an offer filed with the court on Friday, January 6, took his and the victim’s son to a Christmas celebration on December 26.

Richmond was driving the boy back to the victim’s home in East Garfield Park at 2:40 a.m. when he pocket-dialed the victim, according to prosecutors. The victim allegedly heard Richmond disrespect his son, as reported by Fox 32.

Prosecutors claim the 8-year-old boy saw the offender carrying a black handgun with a laser attachment while riding in the car and on the vehicle’s dashboard. Richmond then dropped off his daughter at the victim’s home where the victim’s fiancé, as well as the victim’s youngest son and nephews, were all present at the time.

The 8-year-old girl told her mother that her father had yelled at her, after which the mother contacted Richmond, resulting in a verbal altercation between the two, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Richmond fled the residence and fired more rounds into the victim’s fiancé’s empty vehicle parked across the street from the residence, resulting in damage to the vehicle’s passenger-side doors.

When emergency teams arrived, she was taken to the nearest hospital, where she was operated on to remove her gallbladder and intestine. Prosecutors said the victim miscarried as a result of the trauma she experienced.

According to authorities, three 9mm round casings were found outside the victim’s door, and seven more 9mm bullet casings and one piece were found near the victim’s fiance’s car. Richmond was undoubtedly recognized by the victim as the shooter.
