An Alabama woman is the subject of a missing persons investigation after authorities say she went missing after calling 911 to report a child walking on the side of a road. Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell, 25, called 911 around 9:34 p.m. on Thursday and reported seeing a small child walking on the side of I-459 South near mile marker 11, according to a news release from the Hoover Police Department.

Before police arrived, Russell stopped to check on the girl and called a relative to tell them what she saw, police said. During the call, the family member lost contact with Russell, but the phone line remained open. When police arrived at the scene, they found Russell’s abandoned car with some of her belongings near it, but could not find her or a child in the area, according to the statement.

Nichole Russell went missing

Russell’s mother told Alabama Local that the person her daughter was speaking to on the phone was her son’s girlfriend, who she claimed heard screaming before the call went mostly silent. “My son’s girlfriend overheard her asking the boy: ‘Are you okay? She never heard the girl say anything, but then she heard our daughter scream,” Talitha Russell said, according to the outlet. “From there, all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

Hoover police added that the department has not received any other calls from someone missing a young child. The woman’s mother told Alabama Local that there was a report from a trucker who claimed that she saw her car with the door open and a gray car pulled up near him at the time she allegedly disappeared.

Russell’s family is now turning to the public for clues as police continue to investigate the woman’s disappearance. “Friends and family, whatever city or state you are in, I wish someone would lead the search parties,” Russell’s mother wrote on Facebook. Thank you and we are not receiving any negative thoughts. God is faithful and Carlee will be found safe and free from all harm, harm and danger.”

Russell’s father, Carlos Russell added, according to WVTM 13: “We’re just going to tour the land. There’s nothing stopping us.” Russell is described as a black female who is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs between 150 and 160 pounds.
