A young Wisconsin bride has died after a fire in her home broke out hours before she was due to walk down the aisle. Paige Ruddy died of a brain hemorrhage Wednesday after suffering smoke inhalation when her Reedsburg home caught fire Tuesday, the day of her wedding to Logan Mitchell-Carter, NBC 15 reported. Ruddy and Mitchell-Carter exchanged vows in a private ceremony Monday night before the small wedding the next day with close family members. The newlywed lived in the West Second Street home with Mitchell-Carter and his grandparents. Ruddy’s aunt said the family does not believe there are any working smoke detectors located in the home, which was owned by her boyfriend’s grandparents.
“She was just a beautiful human. There was nothing about her that you couldn’t like,” the aunt, identified as Holly, told NBC 15. “She was this presence that you never knew you needed in your life, but you always did.” Ruddy planned to enroll in a veterinary technology program at Madison Area Technical College in the fall, according to her family.
Lily Markgraf, who graduated from Reedsburg Area High School with Ruddy in June 2022, said the two became fast friends by the time she reached seventh grade. “She had a big loving heart,” Markgraf told the outlet. “She was there for anyone who needed her, even if she didn’t like the person. If they needed her help from her, she would be there to help them. I will miss her for the rest of my life.”
