The son of a Japanese lawmaker Masanori Aoki was arrested in central Japan on Friday for allegedly killing four people during a bloody rampage, including two policemen who responded to reports of a stabbing. The shocking bloodbath marked the first time in 33 years that multiple police officers have been killed in the line of duty, according to Kyodo News. Violent crime is rare in Japan, which has strict gun control laws and only a handful of gun-related crimes annually.

According to The Japan Times, the accused shooter, Masanori Aoki, 31, a farmer by trade, is the eldest son of Masamichi Aoki, the president of the Nakano Municipal Assembly in Nagano Prefecture. The Shinano Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported that the elder Aoki had resigned as a member of the assembly.

Violence broke out in the city of Nakano at around 4:25 p.m. on Thursday, when neighbors reported seeing a woman running from Masanori Aoki down a street. Aoki, dressed in camouflage clothing and brandishing a large knife with an 11-inch blade, allegedly caught up with the victim and stabbed her in the back, before retreating to her home just a few steps away.

Masanori Aoki Accused of killing four people

When two policemen arrived to investigate the stabbing, Aoki allegedly came out of the house with a hunting rifle and shot the two policemen, who were not wearing bulletproof vests. Aoki then barricaded himself inside the family home, where his 57-year-old mother and his 60-year-old aunt were also present. Meanwhile, another injured woman was found near the house.

The suspect’s mother and aunt fled the home separately at 8 p.m. and midnight, respectively, while the confrontation dragged on. Police repeatedly contacted Aoki by phone, trying to get him to surrender. He did not make any demands. During the confrontation, television footage showed policemen in bulletproof vests and shields, with an ambulance nearby.

Police cordoned off a 330-yard radius around the house and city officials urged residents of the quiet farming neighborhood to stay inside or take shelter at an evacuation center. Around 4:30 a.m. m. on Friday, 12 hours after the initial attack, Aoki left the house and surrendered with his hands up. Police said he was arrested under a warrant on suspicion of murder and admitted guilt to him during questioning.

The two police officers and the stabbed woman were pronounced dead at the hospital. The other woman found wounded near Aoki’s house was pronounced dead after her surrender. The four victims of the rampage were identified as Lt. Yoshiki Tamai, 46, and Sgt. Takuo Ikeuchi, 61 years old.

The two women were named as Yukie Murakami, 66, and Yasuko Takeuchi, 70. Nagano Prefectural Police Chief Iwao Koyama offered his condolences to the victims, calling the loss of two policemen “extremely regrettable.” It was not immediately clear if Aoki knew the female victims before the rampage; no reason has been revealed.

At a press conference, the chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, Koichi Tani, said that Aoki had licenses to possess four hunting and air rifles authorized by the prefectural public safety commission, and that license renewals your license were successful.
