Abel spoke to the media about how this has affected him. He claimed that he was a man with a clean record and someone who had never been on the wrong side of the law before. “My life has been destroyed, my reputation ruined… I didn’t kill any of those girls. I wouldn’t know how to kill,” he said. Abel died in 2005, when he was 65, when he was beaten. by a train while riding in a golf cart, it is unclear to this day if he intended to die or if it was accidental.

Texas Killing Fields is a 25-acre piece of land in the area along Interstate 45 between Houston and Galveston. More than 30 bodies have been found in the area between 1971 and 2006, giving rise to its unceremonious nickname. Most of the people whose remains were found on the ground were little girls or adult women, all between the ages of 12 and 25. The man is linked to the deaths of four women, but he was never convicted, according to Newsweek.

In 1984, the first of the four women, with the remains of 23-year-old Heidi Fye, was found on the ground right next to where Laura Miller’s was found two years later. As investigations into Miller’s missing body were underway, another body was found, which was not identified until years later as Audrey Lee Cook, a mechanic last seen alive in 1985.
