Sonja Moen was killed by her husband

Sonja Moen’s mother arrived a minute after the first responding officer, police said. Police asked her mother and Spencer Moen to leave the bathroom, where Sonja Moen’s body was found, into the next room. “After leaving the bathroom, [the mother] looked at Spencer and said ‘get out of my house,'” police said. “While in the bedroom, officers noticed bruising on Spencer’s right hand in the knuckle area.”

Cops also said they found blood on the floor of the master bedroom. Drops of blood were seen on the left side of the bed, on the floor and at the foot of the bed toward the bathroom, police said. Officers said they found out Spencer Moen had been golfing the day before, Aug. 9, and Sonja Moen went looking for him after dark. They bought sandwiches and cigarettes at a Holiday Convenience Store on the way home, Spencer Moen allegedly told police.

“According to witness statements, Sonja and Spencer would have arrived home around 10 p.m. (CST),” police said. According to Sonja Moen’s mother, Spencer Moen brought the children to daycare on the morning of August 10 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. m. and 7:30 a.m. m., approximately two hours earlier than usual. The normal time is 9 a.m., the mother told police.

Officers took Spencer Moen into custody and took him to the police department for an interview. He allegedly said that he and his wife were intoxicated when they got home. “When asked about the injuries to Sonja’s face, Spencer explained that when they got home from Mapleton, Sonja had tripped going up the steps from the garage to the house and was left with her face planted,” police wrote. .

In a later conversation with officers, Spencer Moen allegedly said that he put his children to bed. After that, he went downstairs with Sonja Moen and argued with her again while he smoked in the garage. He allegedly claimed that his wife hit him on the back of the head.

Spencer Moen allegedly claimed that his wife then jumped on him while he was in bed. They rolled over the side of the bed when she hit him. He shoved it down her throat, but she continued to attack, he allegedly claimed. Spencer Moen allegedly claimed that he punched her in the face three or four times.

“F- you, I’m taking a shower,” said Sonja Moen in this account.

But police found no marks on Spencer Moen to indicate his wife hit him, according to the affidavit. In this alleged account, Sonja Moen entered the bathroom, but Spencer Moen did not hear the running water in the tub, he allegedly said. Defendant claimed that he went downstairs for approximately 15 minutes to smoke after hearing a commotion in the bathtub but did not verify.

“Spencer was asked if it would be fair to say that Sonja had fallen in the bathtub due to head trauma associated with the intentional strikes,” the officers said. “Spencer said, ‘Sure.'” Spencer Moen allegedly said that when he returned, he saw his wife lying in the bathtub alive and making noise, but not speaking. The police officers said they also spoke to the children.

“According to one of the children, they were present when Spencer and Sonja were fighting and observed Sonja’s blood on Spencer’s face,” police said. “It should also be noted that officers were also able to recover Sonja and Spencer’s Apple iPhones.” Police said it turned out that Sonja Moen’s eldest daughter called her on the night of August 9. However, Spencer Moen picked her up at 10:41 p.m. m.

“She explained that Spencer’s voice sounded irritated and he told her to go to bed because it was late,” police said. “Spencer’s daughter said she heard Sonja snoring in the background.” Spencer Moen reportedly denied that this conversation ever happened. Police said they found video on the defendant’s phone showing Sonja Moen lying in the bathtub. It was dated August 9 at 11:37 p.m.

“Video shows Sonja lying in the opposite direction from where she was found by responding patrol officers,” police said. “It appears that Sonja was having extreme difficulty breathing and she was lying in an abnormal sleeping position. Sonja also exhibited a snoring-like sound, which was described by Moen’s eldest son. Based on my training and experience, the sound Sonja makes appears to be consistent with agonal breathing [which is labored breathing associated with agony or death].”

Police determined that the husband filmed the video based on him calling out her name. And yet he allegedly did nothing to help her while she was filming. The autopsy determined that Sonja Moen suffered a subdural hematoma and died from blunt force trauma to the head. She also suffered a broken rib.

Sonja Moen‘s family and friends fondly remembered the mother of three, an InForum report said. She had enrolled in nursing school. Sonja Moen worked in endoscopy at Sanford Health after graduation and came to supervise the unit. Colleagues at her most recent workplace at Valley Oral Surgery described her as bubbly and bright.
