Tailei Qi, a graduate student at UNC Chapel Hill, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the campus shooting that left a faculty member dead. Qi, a sophomore majoring in applied physical sciences, was not officially identified by university officials or authorities Monday, but his name appeared in court documents obtained by NBC. The suspect’s relationship to the unidentified fatality remains unclear.

UNC police said during a news conference that the motive was not immediately apparent, adding that the victim’s name would be released once next of kin were notified. According to his LinkedIn page, Qi graduated from Wuhan University in 2015 and also earned a master’s degree in materials science from Louisiana State University in 2021.

Qi then joined UNC at Chapel Hill’s Yan Lab in 2022; his profile page on the university’s website had been removed Tuesday morning. The suspect worked as a researcher in China before pursuing a doctoral career in the United States. A Twitter account believed to belong to Mr. Qi reveals that he had criticized his work and his lab head, as well as what he described as “thugs” in the US, before allegedly carry out the mass shooting.

In an August 1, 2022 post, he wrote: “Harassment in [A]merica seems to be a problem. It often happens that people don’t stop them the first time. “The explanation is not a solution, but it makes them feel like others will beg for them every time they raise a problem, making them voyeurs looking for an excuse day and night.” UNC Police issued an alert for an active shooting situation shortly after 1:00 p.m. m. Monday, ordering students to shelter-in-place and barricade themselves inside lecture halls after reports of gunfire in the science building.

Images shared online showed desperate students and faculty jumping out of windows or ducking in classrooms as UNC police, FBI, ATF and SWAT teams searched the campus for the shooter.

Nearly an hour and a half after the ordeal, UNC police released a photo of a person of interest and asked the public to call 911 and proceed with caution when spotting the individual. A name was not released, but Mr. Qi’s name began circulating in local media after reports surfaced that the photo released by authorities matched the one on his UNC profile page.

Mr. Qi was arrested near a residential area two miles from campus on Williams Circle, but the shelter-in-place order was not lifted until 4:30 p.m. At a press conference that same evening, UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and UNC Police Chief Brian James confirmed that a faculty member had been killed. The weapon used in the shooting had yet to be recovered as of Monday night amid an ongoing investigation into the circumstances and motive for the shooting.

“I am saddened to report that one of our teachers was killed in this shooting. This loss is devastating and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our university community,” said Mr. Guskiewicz.
