According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, Blaha went to Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center on November 22, 2022, where he met with an Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) employee. Blaha allegedly said that he “gave gave birth to a baby at her residence and that it had been buried in an undisclosed location.” The IDHS employee contacted the Webster County Law Enforcement Center and a detective from the sheriff’s office responded to the scene.

In an interview with the detective, Blaha said that she found out that she was pregnant with Thoma’s child in April 2022. The two already have a 2-year-old son together. She explained that she gave birth to a girl in the bathroom of her apartment located in the 900 block of Central Avenue in Fort Dodge on November 16.

“She said that Thoma was in the bedroom of the apartment when she gave birth, but that once the baby was born, he went into the bathroom and helped her from where she was sitting on the toilet to a sitting position inside the bathtub with the baby,” the affidavit reads. “She informs the two that they named the baby Kayleen Lee Blaha and that she was born alive, crying, moving her arms and legs and opening her eyes, allowing Blaha to see that Kayleen had brown eyes.”

Blaha allegedly said that she asked Thoma for methamphetamine to help ease the pain of childbirth and he provided her with the drugs. She told the detective that they had “no intentions” to keep the child and that they planned to let Blaha’s sister adopt the child. She added that Thoma cut the umbilical cord with a pair of scissors and cut “sections of the cord to remember the baby.”

However, Blaha told authorities that she and Thoma soon became nervous that her neighbors would hear Kayleen crying and alert the police. They were afraid that if the police came to the house and found methamphetamine in the baby’s system, they would lose custody of their 2-year-old son.

“Blaha went on to explain that to stop the crying, the two placed Kayleen in the bathtub, which was half full of water, and placed both hands on the baby’s chest, forcing her under the water and ultimately killing her,” he said. affidavit statements. “Blaha also explained that Thoma showed him how to do this. While Kayleen’s body was never recovered, investigators executed a search warrant at her apartment and recovered what appeared to be the part of the umbilical cord that Thoma had as a memento. “This case and that of co-defendant Brandon Thoma is truly heartbreaking,” Assistant Attorney General Ryan Baldridge said after Blaha’s sentencing. “It is difficult and tragic every time a life is lost, but in this case that life was as innocent and helpless as it seems. The agreement with Blaha allowed the state to have a strong case against Thoma while also ensuring that Blaha suffered the consequences of his abhorrent conduct.”
