Thomas Cashman has been found guilty of murdering Liverpool pupil Olivia Pratt-Korbel in a shooting that “shocked the nation”. The 34-year-old cannabis dealer fatally shot the nine-year-old girl inside his own home while chasing a rival during a gang heist gone wrong.

Cashman, a father of two, claimed he was being “stitched up” during his trial and pleaded with the jury: “I’m not a murderer, I’m a father.” But despite his repeated denials, the Manchester Crown Court jury rejected his claims to convict him of Olivia’s murder after a four-week trial. The jury had been considering his verdicts, which were unanimous, for nearly nine hours.

Thomas Cashman accused of  killing Olivia Pratt-Korbel

Members of Cashman’s family, including his partner, protested his innocence in an angry confrontation with police officers inside the court building after the verdict. His sister yelled at the officers: “They have sewn him up.” Olivia was shot in the chest by Cashman, who “ruthlessly and relentlessly” pursued another man, Joseph Nee, a convicted burglar, to his home in Knotty Ash, Liverpool.

Cashman, a violent drug dealer, was determined to get Nee out, after a feud between rival Merseyside gangs broke out. Prosecutor David McLachlan, KC, said he had carried out the “pre-planned” attack without “any consideration” for members of the community.

Cashman had spent the day scouting his target and was lying in wait for Nee on the night of August 22 last year. As Nee emerged from a property on Finch Lane, Knotty Ash, Cashman, wearing a mask, approached her and fired three shots from a 9mm pistol. Standing over his victim, CCTV captured him attempting to fire a fourth time, but the gun appeared to misfire.

Nee managed to get up and run and when Olivia’s mother, Cheryl, opened the door of her house to see what the noise was, he burst into her house with the gunman chasing him.
