FLORIDA: A married Florida principal who had been accused of sexually abusing a male student whom he viewed as a mother figure has been officially charged. Tracy Smith, 43, the principal of Coral Springs Xceed Preparatory Academy, was arrested in the school parking lot on Monday, April 17, 2023 for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female 10th grade student. The identity of the victim has not been made public.

In October 2022, the defendant, married and mother of three children, began helping the teenager with her studies. She visited her office regularly for studies and exams, and sometimes spent the whole day there. They formed a close personal relationship and discussed their family problems. Gradually, their relationship extended beyond the confines of the classroom and they began to communicate intimately through iMessage and Snapchat.

Tracy Smith accused of soliciting and engaging in sexual conduct

According to an arrest report obtained by the Daily Mail, Smith made a comment to the teen about oral sex during one of her conversations. The two also shared photos, in which the teen was shirtless while Smith was clothed. According to the allegations, Smith’s alleged predatory behavior quickly progressed into unwanted touching. The teen complained about Smith to school authorities on Thursday, April 13, telling them the principal “crossed the line.”

The teen revealed to investigators that he considered Smith a mother figure and initially found her touch comforting. However, Smith’s actions went from touching her leg with hers to touching her leg with her hand. The report also stated that the teen admitted to returning her advances by touching her back at one point.

The report mentions that the teenager informed the police that he became uncomfortable with the situation after his daily study sessions continued for months. His academic performance began to deteriorate since Smith was no longer helping him with his schoolwork. Consequently, he stopped having contact with Smith before reporting her to the authorities.

According to NBC6 Miami, Smith was granted a $25,000 bond during a court hearing on Tuesday, April 18. As a condition of her bail, he was told to refrain from contacting the victim, visiting the school, or having contact with minors other than her family members. Broward jail records indicate the former warden now faces one charge of soliciting and engaging in sexual conduct by an individual in a position of authority.

A representative for the school has released a statement expressing surprise and dismay at the allegations against Smith. The statement also verified that Smith’s employment had been terminated. “The allegations that resulted in the arrest of Ms. Smith yesterday came as a complete shock to everyone at the school,” the statement read. “The school and its staff will cooperate with law enforcement in every way possible.
