Bickford, 19, is accused of stabbing two officers at a security checkpoint near Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
A man accused of attacking police with a machete near New York’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve, wounding two officers, was arrested Monday on attempted murder charges, police said Monday.
Trevor Bickford, 19, also faces attempted assault charges, the New York Police Department said in a statement.
Bickford was hospitalized after being shot in the shoulder by police during the confrontation and was awaiting arraignment. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak on the allegations.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that investigators were looking into whether he was inspired by radical Islamic extremism.
The violence occurred about two hours before midnight Saturday, just outside the high-security zone where revelers are screened for weapons before entering one of the world’s biggest and most famous New Year’s Eve celebrations.
A senior law enforcement source also told Fox News Digital that Bickford was being watched by the FBI’s counterterrorism task force in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s attack. The source also said that Bickford recently converted to Islam and an insider claimed that he had expressed an interest in going to Afghanistan.

New York Mayor Eric Adams praised the officers’ response at a Sunday morning news conference. He added that all of the officers involved were in stable condition and are expected to recover.
