Nelson told police that he gave up his daughter for adoption but that he could not provide any records to officers. The police chief was confident enough to say several times that there will be a “high probability” that murder charges will be filed. “I would venture to say that there is a high probability that murder charges will be filed in this case at some point in the near future,” he said. “There is a high probability of that.”

Acevedo said that he went to the place and saw the impact of the case on the community and the investigating police officers who “had to find that little angel in the conditions in which they found her.” He also credited the Hobbs’ grandmother, Nelson’s mother, with doing the right thing.

“Our hearts go out to the family. Think about this grandmother. She just lost a grandson and now she also loses a daughter,” Acevedo noted. “But Grandma did the right thing, and for that I’m grateful.” The police chief said the grandmother’s decision to call the police will ensure a “proper burial sooner rather than later, rather than [the victim] being locked in a closet.” Acevedo encouraged the community to be “attentive” and take care of their neighbors.

“Please don’t hesitate to come forward,” he said, hoping that attentive, even “nosy” members of the public can help prevent a similar case from happening again.
