An Ohio State University graduate student who went missing last month was found dead last week in a remote quarry, according to officials and her family. The body of Amina Alhaj-Omar, 25, was found Wednesday, her family said, according to WCMH. The remains were discovered in a quarry behind a BP gas station where she was last seen, her family added.

Columbus police told the news station that officers found the remains in a “remote area.” It is unknown at this time how she died herself. “We are devastated by our immense loss, but we also thank God every day for blessing us with the privilege of knowing and loving his beautiful soul for the past twenty-five years,” Alhaj-Omar’s family wrote in an obituary. Her family said in an obituary that the Ohio State student disappeared on June 10.

Amina Alhaj-Omar found dead

While her initial disappearance set off a frantic search, it was called off 19 days after all leads were exhausted, authorities said at the time, according to WCMH. “While the investigation is still ongoing, the active search for Ms. Omar has been concluded,” police said. Alhaj-Omar graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor’s degree in criminology before beginning graduate studies in social work, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Relatives previously told the newspaper that police thought she may have entered the quarry pond. Her jacket, shoes and her cell phone were found on the property, her sister said last month. Her family said she “worked hard to pursue her admirable dream of fighting for the people.”

“Most people who really knew Amina immediately remember her laugh – she was contagious and brought happiness to everyone in the room,” says her obituary. “She had a way of making people feel comfortable and welcome in any situation. Her personality was just beautiful: a bubbly, shy, caring, fun loving human being inside and out.”Read more…….
