Deputies in two states fear the recently discovered remains belong to a missing pregnant woman, and say they have arrested the suspect in her murder. During the disappearance, 19-year-old Anastasia Gilley was remembered by family members as a gregarious “flyer,” but that lively life is apparently over.

Marquis Devan McCloud is charged in Alabama with capital murder during first-degree kidnapping in his death, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said Wednesday. Agents previously said Gilley, who was four months pregnant, was last seen at her home on May 3.

Citing interviews and other evidence, law enforcement searched locations in both counties. Authorities suggest that a body discovered early Wednesday morning near Headland, Alabama, is Gilley, but an autopsy must formally confirm this.

“This is a large multi-state investigation and it is ongoing, but a suspect is in custody and is not a threat to the public,” the agents said. They said McCloud, an Alabama resident, was uncooperative during the investigation.

Investigators did not immediately suggest a motive. The family made it clear that Gilley’s disappearance was out of character. “We don’t know what’s going on, but she didn’t run away,” her stepfather James Delaney said during the missing person case, according to WCTV.

“She’s 4-foot-11 and acts like 10-foot tall and bulletproof, but this is a big world for her,” said her former legal guardian Mary Taylor. “This is a big world and we want Anastasia to be safe at home. We have another grandchild on the way and we want them safe at home.” The last time Gilley contacted anyone was a text message to her best friend from Kentucky of hers, Taylor said. But she then went “radio silent,” she missed a doctor’s appointment and several shifts at Jim’s Buffet and Grill.

“We want her to come home safely,” her aunt Shana Sheawa said during the missing person case, according to WJHG.
