In a shocking case of blatant racism, an Indiana University student was repeatedly stabbed in the head on a bus on Wednesday, January 11, for “being Chinese.” Billie Davis, 56, admitted to police that she attacked the unsuspecting student in Bloomington for no reason other than her race.The suspect allegedly told authorities that the 18-year-old, who has not been identified, “would be one less person to blow up our country.”

Davis, who can be seen smiling in the mugshot of her, was initially charged with assault after hospital workers found seven stab wounds to the victim’s head. However, after being interviewed again on Thursday, January 12, Davis allegedly admitted to using a knife in the racial assault and was charged with attempted murder. That said, it’s unclear if she’ll also be charged with a hate crime. Police said the attack was unprovoked.

According to court documents obtained by WRTV, the victim told officers how she tried to get off the bus at 4:45 p.m. m. on Wednesday, but she was struck by a stranger with whom she had not interacted during the bus ride. The police report noted that Davis spontaneously struck the student as she waited for the doors to open.

Footage reviewed by investigators showed Davis exiting the bus and walking away from the scene as the victim remained on the scene bleeding. A witness reportedly followed the suspect to share her location with police. Davis is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail on $100,000 bond and $1,000 cash bond, court records show.

Asians make up about 10% of the population of Bloomington, a college town southwest of Indianapolis, according to the US Census Bureau. “Bloomington was sadly reminded this week that anti-Asian hate is real and can have a painful impact on individuals and our community,” said James Wimbush, vice president for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs at Indiana University, in a statement, adding: “One should not face harassment or violence because of their background. , ethnicity or heritage. Instead, the Bloomington and IU communities are stronger because of the great diversity of identities and perspectives that make up our university and community culture.”

Meanwhile, Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton described the attack as a “racially motivated incident” and said his staff was working to support the victim and the broader local Asian community. “I want to state categorically that here in the city of Bloomington we deplore any form of racism and discrimination, especially hate-based violence,” he said in a statement released on Saturday, January 14.

Indiana University’s Center for Asian Culture also condemned the attack. “We shouldn’t fear for our lives on public transportation. Taking the bus shouldn’t be dangerous,” the group said in a statement, adding that the attack sent “a family jolt” through Indiana’s Asian community.
