A British teenager who was found dead with head injuries in a forest in Thailand has been killed by Chaiwat Boonkarin an ex-convict during an alleged drug deal, according to local police. CCTV footage showed the latest sighting of Woramet Ben Taota, 16, who was out for a motorcycle ride with his girlfriend Yam, also 16, in their hometown of Lampang on Saturday.

Officials said Chaiwat Boonkarin, 44, confessed to killing the teenager after an argument broke out, according to the Telegraph. Boonkarin got very angry and killed the boy with a piece of wood because he believed that Taota stole something and was lying, according to reports.

The 44-year-old man, who had connections to local drug trafficking, was released from prison eight months ago after being convicted of sexual offences. Taota, a dual national, borrowed his mother’s blue scooter and was seen driving with a girl in the back before he was found dead the next day in Lampang province on May 7. His body was later found in a grove of trees, with injuries that appeared to be blunt force.

Police said he was “involved romantically” with 16-year-old Suraphltchaya Khamsa, who was traveling with him around 4:25 p.m. while visiting his grandfather.

Officers reported that the teen’s phone and cash were missing from her bag and suggested it may have been stolen. They believe he was killed elsewhere and left in the woods as there was no sign of a struggle. Thai media reported that Ben’s body was found by a garbage collector who was at work on Sunday morning.

Police Colonel Sittisak Singtongla, the Mae Tha Police Superintendent, said: “The station received a notification at 10:15am that a person was found dead in the undergrowth.” Investigation teams from the Mae Tha Police Station and the Lampang Provincial Investigation Team, along with forensic officers, forensic doctors and staff from Tanna Krua Forest Rescue attended the scene.
