This is the chilling moment an older brother leads his 16-year-old sister into a woods before attempting to rape and then strangle her to death. Connor Gibson, 19, attacked his younger sister, Amber, in a park in Hamilton, on the outskirts of Glasgow. He stripped her of her clothing before sexually assaulting and hitting her over the head, then fatally strangled her.

Jurors heard that the brothers had been in foster care together, but had recently been living apart. Amber was “excited” to catch up with her older brother on the night of November 26, 2021 and sent a selfie to a friend captioned “my older brother” hours before he fatally attacked her after a fight.

Security cameras from before the murder show Connor, now 20, walking alongside Amber on a sidewalk. Later footage captures Connor walking alone to his house before crouching for several seconds next to a fence, apparently exhausted. He is later filmed tiptoeing out of his sheltered accommodation before disposing of items he wore during the attack, including a blood-stained coat that later helped convict him.

Today, the siblings’ adoptive parents, Carol and Craig Niven, recalled how Connor had said ‘we’re safe’ when they first cared for him and Amber, before adding: ‘They were until you took that safety away.’ Amber was reported missing on the night of Friday, November 26, and her body was discovered in Cadzow Glen at 10:10 am on November 28.

Before that, local man Stephen Corrigan, 45, had come across the lifeless teenager while on a walk. But instead of alerting the police, the pervert touched her inappropriately and then hid her body from her view. Connor was arrested on December 1st and, the day before his arrest, he posted a fake Facebook tribute to his sister, writing: “Amber, you will fly high for the rest of time.” We will all miss you. Especially me. I love you redhead dwarf. GBFN (bye for now) x’.

He denied sexually assaulting and murdering Amber, but was convicted after a 13-day trial based on a combination of CCTV footage and DNA evidence, including her bloodstained jacket. Connor now faces life in prison after being convicted of murder and attempted rape. Corrigan was found guilty of breach of the peace and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. They will be jailed in Livingston on September 4.

Charges on Connor Gibson

Amber was last heard from at 9:51 p.m. m. the night of her murder. She sent a seemingly cheeky selfie with Gibson to a friend via Snapchat with the caption “my big brother.” The friend, Angel McKean, described Amber as her “little sister” of hers and recalled seeing her only hours before she was murdered. He said that she was going to meet her brother and she seemed pretty excited about it,’ the 19-year-old recalled.

At the time of Amber’s murder, Connor was living at the Blue Triangle homeless shelter in Hamilton, while she was at the Hillhouse Children’s Home. Earlier this month, 20-year-old Jamie Starrs was convicted of raping Amber five months before her death at her home in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. He has not yet been sentenced.

Meanwhile, Connor’s paternal father, Peter Gibson, has been jailed for 10 years for physical and sexual abuse while his son awaits trial for murder. The 62-year-old man raped a woman in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, which included tying him up and blindfolding him.

Reporting on his case was delayed until the end of the murder trial. The night of Amber’s murder, Connor returned to his hostel around midnight and collapsed in an office where project worker Suzanne Duddy was sitting. Miss Duddy, 55, said she looked like she had “fallen into a ditch”. She added: ‘He looked very disheveled, out of breath. His hands were very, very dirty up to the wrist. I asked him if he was alright, but he didn’t answer. Connor went on to ask to make a phone call.

Miss Duddy said: ‘She explained to me that he had family problems and had an argument with his sister. That’s why she wanted to use the phone to see if she returned home safely…’ The court heard that Connor did not seem thrilled when he spoke to himself and Amber’s former adoptive father, Craig Niven, the day Amber’s body was found two days after the murder.

Giving evidence, Mr. Niven had said that he would not leave the brothers in each other’s company because “they were not a good mix”. Mr. Niven and his wife had adopted the siblings since Amber was three and her brother was five. The couple were granted permanent care of the siblings a few years later. The forensic pathologist who carried out the autopsy on Amber’s body told the court that she was found covered in mud and that the cause of death was “neck compression”.

Jurors also heard other forensic evidence that “widespread bloodstains” on Connor’s jacket were consistent with Amber and his DNA was also found on his shorts, worn as underwear, which had been “forcibly torn off.” The court also heard from Peter Benson, from Police Scotland’s cybercrime group, who examined a phone found where Connor lived.

He showed that on November 27, around 12:34 a.m. m., the phone user wrote to a Snapchat group with five recipients: “I’m really going to need some help when you get back.” I’m being serious.’ The court saw evidence that about 40 seconds later, the user messaged Amber on the app: “Are you okay?” The user then told the group chat at approximately 1:33am: ‘nvm (nevermind) everything is fine’.

Search history obtained from the phone also showed that the user searched for ‘How to stop nosy cops from monitoring your phone’ at 11:38 p.m. Iain Currie, manager of Hillhouse Children’s Home, told the court that he spoke to Connor around 9 p.m. m. on November 26 after he called to speak to his sister, but he noticed that he seemed ‘sharp’ on the phone after not saying hello.

Also on trial was Stephen Corrigan, 45, who was found guilty of attempting to circumvent the ends of justice by intimately touching and concealing Amber’s body after discovering her sometime in the following two days, instead of contacting emergency services. Corrigan, who said in court that he was not known to Connor, also denied the charge and put forward a special defense of alibi.

His father, William Corrigan, 79, told the court that his son was at home in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, that weekend after a fall on the ice that left his arm in a sling and denied lying to protect him. The court heard Corrigan told police he was “absolutely lost” to explain why his DNA was found on 39 areas of Amber’s body, including her breasts, buttocks and thighs. Today Lord Mulholland ordered Gibson and Corrigan remanded in custody after the jury returned their verdicts.

Turning first to Gibson, he said, “Your sister, the last person she saw was you strangling her.” He was depraved. You will pay a high price for that. The judge then told Corrigan: ‘You have been convicted of two horrible crimes. You came across a young woman who had been strangled and was naked.
