A Georgia man broke into a Florida church, causing several thousand dollars worth of damage, then got baptized in the sanctuary pool, police said. Officers responding to a burglary call at the Emerald Beach Church of God in Panama City Beach on Friday discovered that Derek Porter had used a cinder block to break a window to gain entry, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office said. A church employee fled when she heard glass breaking, police said.

“While he was inside, Porter caused approximately $8,000 worth of damage to the church,” police said in a statement. “Porter then loaded various electronic devices, including a television and a computer, into his truck along with the bag of church money.” The suspect, who was out on bail for a robbery in Georgia, was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia when he was arrested, police said.

“Porter said that he could not remember what happened during various moments inside the church,” the department said in the statement. “He did remember, however, baptizing himself in the pool of the church baptistery. Porter claims that ‘something’ was holding his head underwater while he was in the pool,” he added.

Porter has been charged with burglary from an occupied structure, criminal mischief, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held at the Bay County Jail on $19,500 bail, WSB-TV reported. Body camera footage shows officers contacting Porter and cleaning the church. While he was inside, a police dog “decided to beat the heat and cool off in baptism,” police said.Read More……..
