Sabiriin Ali, 17; Sahra Gesaade, 20; Salma Abdikadir, 20; Sagal Hersi, 19; and Siham Adam, 19, were identified as the victims of the horrifying incident. All five were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver is 27-year-old Derrick John Thompson, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Thompson tried to flee the crash, but was found at a nearby Taco Bell after onlookers called police.

A Minnesota State Police officer began chasing the SUV on an interstate highway as it sped near 100 mph where the speed limit is 55 mph in south Minneapolis, according to the state Department of Public Safety. The SUV left the road before it could be stopped and ran through a red light, crashing into the woman’s car. All five regularly attended the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in nearby Bloomington, Minnesota, according to director Khalid Omar.

‘These are pearls of our community. They leave a great void. All five had a bright future, ”he said. Ali had just graduated from high school and was scheduled to attend the University of Minnesota while the other four were currently in college.

“They weren’t doing anything wrong,” Omar added. They were preparing for their friend’s wedding. Omar noted that the five women volunteered at the Islamic Center, with Ali and her mother working as caretakers, while Abdikadir often taught the children to read and write Arabic.

All five are scheduled to be buried Monday. Thompson was also injured in the accident. He is currently hospitalized after undergoing drug and alcohol tests. The Islamic Center has initiated a public fundraiser for the families involved, which has raised more than $317,000.

‘Today we are in deep sorrow, as our community experienced a heartbreaking tragedy last night. We have lost five of our bright young sisters in a serious car accident.
