A six-year-old Texas boy tragically died a month after his father was struck and killed by lightning while they were holding hands. Grayson Boggs, 6, was being picked up from the school bus by his father Matthew, 34, on May 15 when he struck them, killing Matthew instantly.

Paramedics took Grayson to the hospital and he remained in critical condition with brain damage for over a month before his death on June 16. Words cannot describe this,’ the boy’s aunt wrote on social media. “You fought so hard through all of this, now you can rest, my handsome and funny nephew.”

The tragic incident occurred after Matthew picked up his children from the school bus and they were walking up the driveway of his family’s home in Valley Mills, Texas. Matthew’s mother, Angela Boggs, has heartbreakingly revealed that the father and son expressed their love for each other moments before the lightning strike.

“(Matthew had just told Grayson that he loved him, he said ‘I love you dude,’ that’s when lightning struck,” Boggs told KWTX. “I always took care of him, because he is the only one that God gave me,” she added, speaking of Matthew. ‘Now my responsibility is to take care of my grandchildren.’ Grayson was quickly placed on life support in a coma after the attack, and it was later determined that he had brain injury caused by lack of oxygen.

As his devastated family prayed for a recovery, they said the boy had shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, including breathing on his own and being removed from the donor list. But on Tuesday, nearly a month after the lightning strike, doctors informed his heartbroken family that his condition would not improve and the decision was made to remove him from the ventilator. He was placed in hospice care a day later, before passing away around 5 a.m. on June 16.

The day before his death, his family had posted an update on his condition in a GoFundMe set up to help pay for funeral expenses. “It’s been 1 month since tragedy struck this family,” the post read. ‘The strength this family has shown is inspiring. Grayson is still holding up, but he’s in comfort care.

“Please pray that we keep him comfortable at this time and pray for the family’s healing.” We may not know what God’s plan is, but we do know that he has his arms around Grayson right now.’ Grayson’s brother, Elijah, who was only a foot away when lightning struck his father and his sister, recalled in harrowing detail the moments after the impact.

‘He was very scared. I turned to Grayson and he was kind of smiling,” he said. “I thought they were just joking, but when I turned my dad around, half of his head was bleeding and his face was already purple.” When first responders arrived on scene, both father and son were unresponsive. Both reportedly lost their shoes due to the intensity of the strike.

While Matthew was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, desperate efforts to resuscitate Grayson landed him at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Waco, Texas. Doctors determined that he was fine from the neck down, however, they discovered that he had suffered neurological problems and sustained significant anoxic brain injury.

Family members said tributes and well wishes poured in from around the world as the boy struggled in a coma. But when doctors informed the family that Grayson’s condition would not improve, the decision was made to remove him from the ventilator. He died three days later. According to the CDC, lightning strikes are most frequent and deadly in the southeastern states, including Texas.

From 2006 through 2021, only five states (Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Washington) and the US Virgin Islands reported no lightning fatalities. Texas ranked second with the highest number of deaths during that period, with 36 people killed, Florida ranked first with 79 deaths.Read More……
