A Georgia doctor is accused of groping a woman sitting next to him on a flight to Maine, where he allegedly planned to propose to his girlfriend, authorities say. Dr. Jake Namjik Cho, a 48-year-old nephrologist from Fayetteville, Georgia, is charged with one count of abusive sexual contact aboard an airplane in connection with the encounter that allegedly occurred during his Delta flight from Hartsfield-Hartsfield International Airport. Charges on Dr. Jake Namjik Cho

The alleged victim claimed that at some point during the flight, Cho had touched his feet to his feet and “appeared to have gone into spasm,” before reaching up to allegedly touch his genital area outside his pants, according to the complaint. She yelled, “Excuse me,” before the man withdrew his hand, the complaint alleges. Once the flight landed, he got to his feet, as soon as it was safe to do so, and walked away from the alleged victim, the complaint says.

Two days later, Cho returned to the Portland International Jetport, where local and federal investigators questioned him about the alleged incident. During voluntary questioning, Cho said that he was a doctor and that he had traveled to Maine to “propose to his girlfriend,” the complaint says. He reportedly denied touching or speaking to the woman.

On April 1, Cho was brought back for voluntary questioning, according to the complaint. Cho continued to deny the allegations, reportedly saying the woman was making up the story. But this time, Cho agreed to take a polygraph test. “Eventually, while he maintained that the actions were not sexual, Cho admitted that he touched Victim 1 during the flight,” the complaint alleges.

In the complaint, authorities allege that Cho told federal investigators in a written statement that he “only intended to squeeze her upper right thigh and never intended to touch his crotch.” Cho added, “Because my glasses were off and it was dark, my hand slid from my upper thigh to my crotch,” the complaint alleges. “As soon as I did this, he instantly exclaimed something out loud that made me take my hand off his leg and sit up straight.”

Cho allegedly said that he was “so embarrassed and didn’t know what to do, so I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep for the rest of the flight.” The complaint states that he also “expressed regret for any harm he may have caused. Prosecutors served Cho with a summons to appear in Maine federal court on June 8, The Daily Beast reports. It is not clear if he has an attorney speaking on his behalf.

According to his biography, Cho, who is board certified in internal medicine, graduated from the University of Florida School of Medicine in 2017 and completed a fellowship at the Maine Medical Center.
