Butler County, Ohio authorities allege the suspect who criminally assaulted and murdered a 25-year-old mother on her front balcony in February was her boyfriend, a person who has been incarcerated numerous times since 2015. According to the indictment, Dustin Scott Lykins, 27, murdered Amber Lynn Adams in Middletown on February 11. When the story was first reported locally, the Journal-News said the shooting occurred on a Saturday night in an apartment on Flemming Road. A man at the residence, Middletown police said, was initially arrested on drug charges after he allegedly admitted to smoking methamphetamine. However, Lykins’ indictment did not mention drugs.

“Dustin Scott Lykins caused the death of Amber Lynn Adams as the immediate result of the offender committing or attempting to commit a crime of violence which is a felony of the first or second degree […] constituting the crime of MURDER […] against peace and dignity of the State of Ohio,” the indictment began. “The grand jurors further find and specify […] that the offender had a firearm on or near the offender’s person or under the offender’s control while committing the crime and displayed the firearm, brandished the firearm fire, indicated that the offender possessed the firearm, or used it to facilitate the offense.”

The other two counts in the indictment charge the defendant with criminal assault for “knowingly” causing “serious bodily harm” to Amber Adams and criminal assault with a deadly weapon, a firearm. Butler County District Attorney Michael T. Gmoser said the indictment remained sealed until Lykins’ arrest by the feds on Wednesday.

“These charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred on February 11, 2023 in the city of Middletown, Ohio. The indictment against Mr. Lykins has been sealed pending his arrest, which was made by federal marshals from the Cincinnati office of the US Marshals Service (SOFAST),” the prosecutor’s office said. “Mr. Lykins’ arrest took place in Madison Township, Butler County, Ohio, on June 21, 2023, at approximately 10:00 AM. m., where the US Marshals took Mr. Lykins into custody without incident.”

According to WXIX, the suspect was seen walking near the Madison Township Fire Department when he was arrested. Butler County jail records reviewed by Law & Crime show he was booked into the jail around 11:06 a.m. on Wednesday. Records from the same jail show numerous prior bookings for Lykins going back eight years. Those arrests were for failure to appear in court, probation violations and a 2015 criminal case for alleged obstruction of official business, possession of criminal tools, trespassing and receipt of stolen property.

Amber Adams, mother of a young son who worked as a manager at Dollar General and Taco Bell, died in the town where she was born and she lived her entire life, her obituary says.
