A Texas man opened fire on a pair of suspects who tried to break into his home over the weekend in a wild scene captured on doorbell footage. One of the suspects, Aaron Contreras, knocked on the door of Ethan Rodriguez’s apartment Saturday night and claimed to be a maintenance worker who was there to check the filters on his air conditioner, according to doorbell camera footage and a affidavit obtained by FOX Dallas.

Rodriguez, who was inside, answered the door through a digital doorbell app on his phone and claimed no one was home, the video shows. A few minutes later, Contreras returned with a gun and tried to break down the front door of Rodriguez’s apartment, according to the clip.

Within moments, Rodriguez grabbed his gun and opened fire from inside his apartment through the front door, sending the men running. The resident fired several rounds, and video shows rounds impacting the concrete wall across the road. Contreras fired two shots in response before fleeing, according to the station.

In total, Rodriguez fired 13 shots, Dallas police said after finding 13 bullet holes exiting the front door and two entering through it. He told WFAA that he decided to shoot the suspects when he saw that Contreras was armed. “I was hoping to get them,” he told the station. “That was basically it, I just hoped I would have them.” He added that he was glad that his neighbors, as well as his own wife and his 7-month-old baby, were not home at the time.

Contreras was arrested the same day on charges of aggravated assault, deadly conduct and attempted burglary, police told Fox. He is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $150,000 bond. Rodríguez had a strong message for Contreras when he spoke with WFAA. “You’re a fucking fool not to wear a mask,” he said, adding that he had his name before his arrest.
