Gunshots shut down popular Chicago beach hours after season opener

A Chicago beach was closed just hours after it opened for Memorial Day weekend after shots were fired during a big fight. The shooting comes after authorities announced they are deploying “peacekeepers” throughout the city in a bid to stave off holiday chaos after nine people were killed and 52 others were shot last year. Gunshots shut down popular Chicago beach hours after season opener.

Crowds of people on North Avenue Beach scrambled for cover Friday when shots were fired after a fight broke out between a group of 80 to 100 teenagers. One person pulled out a gun and fired during the fight that occurred at 1:30 p.m. m. and hundreds of bathers were seen running and screaming. No one was injured by the bullets and no injuries were reported.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault firearm discharge and one count of criminal damage to property in the value of $500 to $10,000. But the weapon was not recovered and is said to have been discarded somewhere. The incident was caught on camera and shows a group of teenagers facing each other while pointing and yelling.

Someone then pulls out a gun and fires a shot causing everyone to rush to escape. People are heard screaming on the beach as they run away from gunfire and a car is seen speeding to get away. The group of teenagers had dispersed by the time the police arrived on the scene, but a 15-year-old boy was arrested for the incident.

A Chicago Park District truck was hit by a bullet and had its windows smashed out. John Muldoon was walking near the beach at the time and told ABC Chicago: “We drove by, and then we saw the truck here obviously with what appears to be gunshots through the windows, and we thought this is creepy.”

And Dan Short, who was on the beach, said, ‘There were a lot of police. I saw at least three individuals who were handcuffed and I didn’t really see exactly what happened or what caused it, but it looked like there was some kind of dispute, obviously. After the shooting, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said, “I am aware of the events that took place on North Avenue Beach late in the afternoon.”

“I am in contact with our first responders and continue to closely monitor and monitor the situation as details develop.” The shooting came hours after Chicago opened its 22 beaches along Lake Michigan to the public ahead of Memorial Day weekend. The Windy City suffered its most violent holiday weekend in five years in 2022, when nine people were killed and 52 others were shot.

In an attempt to prevent the chaos of Memorial Day, officials are deploying “peacekeepers” throughout Chicago. Governor JB Pritzker announced Thursday the establishment of the citywide Crisis Prevention and Response unit, which will work with community organizations to deploy more than 30 trained “peacekeepers” to neighborhoods.
