FLORIDA: Police in Florida have said that a young child, who was reportedly left in a car by his father for five hours, has died. The boy’s father has been arrested by police in connection with his death. He is the one who made the 911 call after realizing the mistake. Police in Port St Lucie, north of West Palm Beach, responded to a report that a two-year-old boy had been left inside a parked car in the 1700 block of Southwest Aires Lane for several hours. At approximately 1:17 p.m. m. Monday, the boy’s father, James Fidele 37, called 911 after realizing he had forgotten to remove the boy from the vehicle that morning, according to the police report.

Fidele reportedly told authorities that after dropping off his four other children at school, he returned home around 8:15 a.m. to start working from his office there, according to WPBF. However, Fidele did not realize that he had left the boy in the back seat of the van until around 1:15 p.m. m., when he went to get a package. When he saw the boy, he was apparently unconscious with his eyes open.

Charges on James Fidele

Following the father’s 911 call, officers began life-saving procedures and assisted him in transporting the child to a nearby hospital. However, the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police later confirmed the presence of a reminder security alarm in the back seat of the SUV, according to a search warrant. According to authorities, Fidele showed “no urgency” in getting his son out of the truck, as shown in a Ring camera recording from a nearby neighbor’s house.

Fidele was arrested and charged with leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle and causing grievous bodily harm. “This is a very unfortunate and tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim during this difficult time,” the Port St Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) said in a press release.

“This can happen to absolutely anyone,” said Janette Fennell, president of Kids and Car Safety. He added: “And the biggest mistake you can think of is that it can’t happen to you. If you put something in the backseat like your purse, cell phone or computer when you leave in the morning with your child and when you get to the Fate will make you open the back door.
