Nine months after his arrest, prosecutors officially charged a Deltona teenager with the murder of his father. Jonny Santiago, now 19, was arrested in July after officers said he shot and killed his father, Juan Santiago, in the driveway of the family home. The shooting launched a multi-day search for the elderly Santiago, whose body was discovered by family members in rural Orange County. The teen was captured after a high-speed chase, crash and shootout with police and officers in Mount Dora.

Since then, Santiago has lived in the Lake County jail while he faces charges for crimes committed there, but the charges in Volusia County remained under wraps. The case has been updated to include his name and charges of second-degree murder, which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

In a phone call Sunday, Santiago’s attorney, Brian Pakett, said the case has a mental health component and Santiago would undergo an evaluation Tuesday. Santiago’s next hearing is scheduled for Friday. It is not clear if he will attend.

Jonny Santiago, the 18-year-old man facing a murder charge in the death of his father, was denied bail during his first appearance in a Lake County courthouse Friday morning. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Thursday that the body recovered at Lake Avalon in Orange County is that of 52-year-old Juan Santiago, the missing father of the teen who led police on a High speed chase that ended in an accident. and shootout with authorities at Mount Dora. Chitwood told reporters that Juan Santiago’s family had found his body in the lake.

“They got a phone call from his daughter saying they found Juan in the Lake Avalon area in a pocket,” Chitwood said. “Detectives went to meet Orange County and found Mr. Santiago deceased.” They believe he has been in the area since around 1 a.m. of Monday. The sheriff said that the son, Jonny, had placed his father in a patch of bushes, in a completely remote location. Juan Santiago had been shot, Chitwood confirmed, but said the medical examiner will determine how many times.

Jonny Santiago is also facing attempted murder charges after allegedly getting into a shootout with police in Mount Dora following a high-speed chase.
