On September 3, 1973, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a call from someone claiming to have found a dead woman in a landfill identified as Tonya Lea Wills Mullins . The woman was wrapped in a blanket and had likely been dead for several days, according to detectives. The woman had no identification and her physical features did not match any recent missing persons case. Investigators ruled her death a homicide. Rankin County detectives classified her as a Jane Doe and she was buried in a local cemetery in Pearl, Mississippi.

How did Tonya Lea Mullins died?

The case remained unresolved until April 2021, when the woman entered the National System of Missing and Unidentified Persons, according to police. A year later, in April 2022, Rankin County Coroner David Ruth filed legal paperwork to exhume the body in hopes of identifying the Jane Doe.

Ruth was able to send multiple samples of her DNA to Othram Labs, a lab that bills itself as “a revolution in cold case solving.” On February 12, 2023, Othram lab technicians were able to identify the woman as Tonya Lea Wills Mullins using forensic-grade genome sequencing.

According to Othram Labs DNA Solves and Central MS Crime Stoppers, Mullins was 22 when she was killed. She was married and had two children, one 2 and 4 years old. Detectives believe she was living in Mississippi at the time of her disappearance, but she was originally from Potter, Texas. It is unclear if her husband, children, friends or other family members ever reported her missing.Read More……
